Retro Theatre

The gates of the Inota Retro Theatre opened in the Béke (Peace) Community Centre of the Bakony Power Plant on 28th November 2009. Pannon Várszínház, which currently rents the building, had used it as a warehouse and a rehearsal place for years. Now they would like to fill it with various fine arts summoning the spirit of the 60s-70s-80s in the preserved building.

The Retro Theatre in Inota was created by the partnership of Pannon Várszínház, Bakony Erőmű Jlc. and the Municipality of Várpalota. The building’s renovation was financed by the power plant, while the acquisition of the theatre technology and equipment were funded by Pannon Várszínház Nonprofit Ltd. The municipality supports the project with an annual contribution of 10 million HUF.

The basic idea behind the project was that the Hungarian countryside lacks host locations for strictly defined professional theatres or even alternative, contemporary initiatives.

Pannon Várszínház would like to change this situation, hoping that other projects follow suit. Since November 2009, the Retro Theatre has operated in the dual function of an individual playhouse and a host theatre for Várpalota.

The name “Retro” derives from the style of the building, which is a unique and intactly preserved example of the architectural and artistic vision of the 1950s. A true retro experience, the community centre reflects the spirit of social realism, and is home to many immovable art works by outstanding artists.

This environment gives us a great opportunity to present plays that were either written in or about the 50s-60s-70s-80s, this inerasable period of Hungarian history, which is still full of unanswered questions yet keeps influencing our present.

We would gradually like to broaden the functions of the Retro Theatre with a wide range of cultural events in the future at Béke Community Centre. We are currently planning to open a retro or art cinema, install a chamber theatre in the lobby and organize fine arts as well as applied arts exhibitions or a photo gallery and live music shows here.
